Heart Murmurs in Boxers: Causes & Treatment Options

Boxers are known for their playful spirit and boundless energy, but like all dogs, they can face some health challenges. One concern that can be particularly worrisome for Boxer families is the discovery of a heart murmur. While the term might sound alarming, not all heart murmurs are cause for immediate concern. In this post, we'll break down what a heart murmur is, why it might occur, and what the future might hold for your furry friend if they’re diagnosed with one. Understanding these factors can help you feel more confident and prepared in caring for your Boxer’s heart health.

What is a heart murmur?

A heart murmur is an abnormal sound heard during a dog’s heartbeat cycle, typically caused by turbulent blood flow within the heart. When a veterinarian listens to your Boxer’s heart with a stethoscope, they may hear this whooshing or swishing noise, which indicates that the blood isn’t flowing smoothly through the heart’s chambers or valves.

What are heart murmur grades in dogs?

Not all heart murmurs sound the same. When your vet listens to your dog's heart, they will assess the intensity, timing, and location of the murmur and grade it using the following scale:

Grade 1: Barely audible - the least serious type of heart murmur

Grade 2: Soft murmur, but easily heard with a stethoscope

Grade 3: Intermediate loudness, most serious problems will result in at least a grade 3 heart murmur in dogs

Grade 4: Loud murmur that can be heard on either side of the chest

Grade 5: Very loud murmur

Grade 6: Very loud murmur that can be felt by placing a hand on the dog's chest wall - the most severe type of heart murmur

What are the symptoms of heart murmurs in dogs?

The symptoms of a heart murmur largely depend on the underlying heart condition that is affecting your pup. Some common symptoms of heart diseases and disorders include:

  • Irregular heartbeat or racing pulse

  • Hacking, persistent cough

  • Excessive panting even when resting

  • Lack of energy or appetite

  • Collapsing or fainting

  • Gums and/or tongue are very light or bluish

  • Severe water retention

Common Causes of Heart Murmurs in Boxers

Heart murmurs in Boxers can be caused by a variety of conditions, ranging from benign to more serious. Here are some of the most common causes:

1. Aortic Stenosis: is a congenital condition common in Boxers, where the aortic valve is narrowed, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood. This can lead to the development of a heart murmur. The condition can vary in severity, from mild cases that require little intervention to more serious cases that may need medication or even surgery.

2. Mitral Valve Disease: is a common cause of heart murmurs in older Boxers. It occurs when the mitral valve, which separates the left atrium from the left ventricle, degenerates and allows blood to flow backward into the atrium. This can cause a murmur and, over time, lead to congestive heart failure if left untreated.

3. Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): is a condition where the heart muscle becomes weak and enlarged, impairing the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. Boxers are genetically predisposed to DCM, which often results in a heart murmur. Unfortunately, DCM is a serious condition that can lead to heart failure, and it often requires long-term medication and careful management.

4. Innocent Murmurs: Not all heart murmurs indicate a serious problem. Innocent, or physiologic, murmurs can occur in young puppies, including Boxers, as they grow and develop. These murmurs are generally harmless and often resolve on their own as the puppy matures.

Diagnosing the Cause

If your veterinarian detects a heart murmur in your Boxer, they may recommend further diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause. Common diagnostic tools include:

  1. Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of the heart that allows the vet to see the heart’s structure and function in real time.

  2. Chest X-rays: These can show the size and shape of the heart and whether there is fluid buildup in the lungs, which can indicate heart failure.

  3. Electrocardiogram (ECG): A test that measures the electrical activity of the heart and can detect abnormal rhythms.

  4. Heart Rate Monitor: A heart rate monitor tracks your Boxer’s heart rate throughout the day, providing data on how their heart responds to different activities, exercise intolerance, and daily variations.

Management and Treatment

Managing a heart murmur in your Boxer involves more than just traditional veterinary care. Holistic health approaches, such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, and dietary adjustments, can complement conventional treatments, helping to support your dog’s overall well-being and potentially improve their quality of life.

Acupuncture for Heart Health

In dogs, acupuncture can be particularly beneficial for supporting heart health and managing symptoms associated with heart murmurs.

Improved Circulation: Acupuncture can enhance blood flow and improve circulation, which is essential for dogs with heart conditions.

•. Stress Reduction: Acupuncture is known for its calming effects, which can help reduce stress and anxiety in dogs. Stress can exacerbate heart conditions, so managing it is an important aspect of holistic care.

•. Symptom Relief: Acupuncture may help alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and general discomfort, improving their overall quality of life.

Herbal Remedies for Heart Support

Herbal medicine offers a natural approach to supporting heart health in Boxers with heart murmurs. Specific herbs can strengthen the heart, improve circulation, and help manage symptoms. However, it’s essential to consult with a veterinarian who is experienced in herbal medicine to ensure the safe and effective use of these remedies.

• Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.): Hawthorn is a well-known herb used to support cardiovascular health. It helps improve heart function, increase blood flow, and reduce blood pressure, making it beneficial for dogs with heart murmurs.

• Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): Dandelion acts as a natural diuretic, helping to reduce fluid buildup in the body, which is a common issue in dogs with heart failure associated with murmurs. It also provides potassium, which supports heart health.

• L- Carnitine: Is an amino acid that helps your dog convert fat into energy, it also keeps them lean and maintains their muscle mass.

Dietary Considerations

Diet plays a crucial role in managing heart health, particularly for dogs with heart murmurs. A balanced diet rich in nutrients that support cardiovascular function can help manage symptoms and improve your Boxer’s overall well-being.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and support heart health by reducing the risk of arrhythmias and improving overall cardiovascular function.

Coenzyme Q10: This antioxidant is essential for energy production in the heart cells. Supplementing with CoQ10 can support heart function and may be particularly beneficial for dogs with conditions like Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Low-Sodium Diet: Reducing sodium intake is important for dogs with heart conditions, as high sodium levels can lead to fluid retention and increase the workload on the heart.

Integrating Holistic Approaches with Conventional Care

Taking a holistic approach to managing your Boxer’s heart murmur can make a big difference in their overall health and happiness. By blending conventional veterinary care with natural therapies like acupuncture, herbal remedies, and a heart-healthy diet, you’re providing your furry friend with the best possible support. Every Boxer is unique, so what works for one might not work for another, but exploring these options can open up new possibilities for your dog’s well-being.
